IKEA

Filed under: family, home — newandunusual @ 7:42 pm

TW bought a grono lamp at IKEA a year ago, when we took Michelle for her birthday shopping spree. It wasn’t long before she knocked it over and cracked it. That crack gives it a bit of character, so it’s ok.

When we went to London in February, the flat we rented had a grono lamp - without a crack.

Now, I keep seeing all of the grono lamp modifications and I am dying for IKEA to open in Orlando so I can go buy a half dozen, mod them and give them as gifts.

Spring is in the air!

Filed under: daily life, family, home, payperpost, shopping — newandunusual @ 1:33 pm

Well it’s in the air down here in Florida. In fact it has been in the air for a good long while and we really need to get into the garden and whip it into shape - before it is too late. The bamboo has taken over, the square foot gardens are growing wild and the fruit trees need some serious attention. Let’s not even think about the patio that has somehow acquired an unusual array of oddities that people have put out there for “temporary storage”.

The job and thinking about the job is overwhelming. I’ve found wandering around gardening websites for inspiration helps. Remember that gnome site I talked about last year? Well the folks over there have added a bunch of new items to their stock. Maybe I will treat our garden to some Stepping Stones once I’ve got it all neat and tidy. Only problem with that is trying to decide which one(s) to choose. I’ve never seen so many different stepping stones. (Please don’t suggest the frogs or the gator - other than that, help me choose 3 or 4, please!)

Beware of Mold!

Filed under: home, payperpost — newandunusual @ 11:29 pm

Until my father discovered a serious mold problem in his recently purchased home, I really had no idea that mold was such a big problem. It took him 2 years, a ton of money, and 2 lawsuits with the seller to get the issue resolved. And in the meantime, the young grandchildren were not allowed to go in various rooms of the house. You can find some really solid information about mold and mold testing at the NJ Mold Remediation website. Mold is bad, bad news.

Moving to Tampa

Filed under: blogs, home, payperpost — newandunusual @ 4:41 pm

How brilliant! I’ve been trying to convince my oldest daughter to leave Charleston and move to Gainesville. Duh, I should convince her to move to Tampa instead! She has a friend in Tampa. It’s a much bigger place than Gainesville, which she likes. Luckily, there is a Tampa Real Estate Agent blogging. I think all real estate agents should be bloggers.

I like the section where he describes each of the Tampa areas. This could actually be helpful to Michelle if she chooses a college in the Tampa area, too. The photos and descriptions of the homes are good but having this page RSS fed and set up through Feedblitz so others could get email notifications when that page is updated would be the only improvement I would make.

The contact info is clear. The resources page is helpful. Categorizing properties by “homes”, “luxury homes” “condos” and “townhomes” is excellent. This makes it much easier to surf if you’re looking for something really specific. This Townhouse is fantastic. I think I’m going to send it to Jenn now and ask her to think about it!

The Perfect House

Filed under: family, home, payperpost — newandunusual @ 4:20 pm

That’s what is on my list of 101 things to do in 1001 days - find the perfect house. It’s not easy, I can tell you that. It’s also not easy when in the back of my mind is the word “mortgage”. Shudder! Mortgage rates are scary. Looking for the right mortgage broker is a nightmare!

To ease the shuddering and keep the nightmares at bay, I’m doing a lot of research now - while I’m searching for the perfect house. I don’t want any extra stress when I’m ready to buy. See this glossary, very helpful information. Quick and easy to navigate.

Maybe the whole mortgage thing won’t be so bad after all.

My pet peeve….

Filed under: daily life, family, home, payperpost — newandunusual @ 4:52 pm

I have a thing for American flags. A lot of people are surprised by this. I’m not really known as being one of the most patriotic Americans but when it comes to the flag, I have very high standards.

I’ve been known to gripe about the way school children are taughter (or not taught) to put up the flag and/or take it down. I gripe about people who leave their flags hanging around the clock in front of their homes, porchlights off at night. I gripe about flags that are worn and tattered but still on display. It’s just not that hard to buy a new one. Buy flags online and on sale at AmericanFlags.com now! If it’s important to you that you display a flag then you should be displaying the flag PROPERLY. There are rules, you know.

My biggest pet peeve related to the American flag is with the businesses and institutions that display flags that are too large for the pole or the area they’re being displayed in. There are at least three that I can think of who are doing this in my town. The one I see on a regular basis is at my daughter’s community college. When the flag needs to be at half-mast, like now for Ford, it can’t be - it would touch the ground! In fact, we have SEEN it touch the ground when the college is trying to get it as close to half-mast as possible.

Michelle has filed several complaints with her college about this flag. She’s probably the LEAST patriotic 16 year old you will meet and my flag issues have rubbed off on her. Or maybe it was growing up in the military where flag etiquette is taught from the cradle. Where all life stops at 5pm because the national anthem is being played and the flag is coming down - cars stop driving in the middle of the street, ball games stop in the middle of a play, all life ceases and everyone stands.

The flag is a BIG deal to us and if you’re going to display it, could you do it properly - please.

In search….

Filed under: home, shopping — newandunusual @ 4:39 pm

I’m in search of a new vacuum cleaner. Or maybe it isn’t a vac I’m looking for but a floor cleaner. We don’t have any carpet in this house, just a couple of large area rugs. We do have wood floors that are seriously unhappy. Steam cleaning seems like a not so good idea because it makes the wood dark. Anyone have any ideas about what type of floor cleaning machine I need?

Insurance

Filed under: home, payperpost, websites — newandunusual @ 7:29 pm

How timely! As part of our start to the new year, a little researching of our current insurance situation is in order. And a little research into our insurance options are also in order. Insure121 has a ton of information about all types of insurance in the UK. Car insurance, home insurance and even pet and travel insurance. You name it, they’ve got the info you need.

Everyone loves to color

Filed under: entertainment, family, holidays, home, toys — newandunusual @ 11:46 pm

OK so not everyone loves to color but I think even people who don’t love to color would love to color themselves - or their favorite kids - or even their favorite pets. Right? If you could gift someone with a coloring book full of coloring pages of people they know, that would be a very popular gift, wouldn’t it? Well what are you waiting for? Thank me later, just get busy creating your coloring book in time for Christmas.

I need more time!

Filed under: blogs, entertainment, family, home — newandunusual @ 4:15 pm

Debra Roby on Blogher posted some links from the blogroll and Art Junk was one of those links. And I love it. Every morning this week I’ve read her blog and wanted to do something fun and crafty. And every evening I’ve been a little sad that I just don’t have the time to do anything even remotely close to the art she’s doing. Maybe in my next life.
