Stuff I Use…

Filed under: blogs, homeschool, websites, work — newandunusual @ 4:53 pm

Someone asked me what “evernote” meant today when I mentioned it in a message board post. So this morning I’m going to provide a list of tools I use (and often mention).

1) Bloglines is my feed reader/aggregator.
2) Evernote is a notepad where I keep all sorts of tidbits of info - from addresses and phone numbers to grocery lists to urls to peek at later.
3) Protopage is a mashup that I use for Michelle’s homeschool stuff.

Those are the big three. It would be hard to survive work without them.

All Words, All of the TIME

Filed under: books, family, homeschool, payperpost, websites — newandunusual @ 4:32 pm

Words rule around here. Let’s focus on TW who plays with words all of the time. And, of course she reads 3xs more than anyone else in the house and is always stumbling upon a weird word and asking “have you ever seen this word in a book before”? And off we go discussing the word, its origin and its potential meaning - before we head for an online dictionary to find out the real answers.

I cannot tell you how many times we’ve used an online dictionary or one of those handheld readers dictionaries only to come up empty. I think the Allwords.com dictionary is the answer to that problem. It allows four search result types and it seems to bring back more “slang” type results than other online dictionaries. I’m sure we’ll put it to the test shortly.

This would be a good resource for kids, too. All of the times a kid asks what a word means or how to spell a word - well Allwords lets you type in part of a word and sort results by “starts with” or “ends with”. That’s a nice feature when you can’t remember the exact word you’re looking for or your don’t know how to spell it.

The other thing I like about Allwords is the ability to surf the dictionary. That’s more important than the search engine, if you ask me. There’s nothing better than randomly surfing words. The links for word lovers section isn’t bad either.

Happy Word Surfing!

Student Aid

As some of you might know, Michelle is a Junior in high school. She’s a homeschooled junior in high school. She’s also enrolled in the community college as part of the dual enrollment program. She should have 2 year’s worth of college credit by the time she graduates from high school. This will go a long way toward helping her pay for college. 2 year’s worth of classes free and paid for!

Have you checked out FAFSA? FAFSA on the Web can help you fill out the FAFSA Form. There’s an audio/mp3 walk-through and FAFSA online has some great tips (they call them secrets) for completing the application process.

College is expensive and every little bit of information is helpful.

Are you a wordie?

Filed under: entertainment, homeschool, websites — newandunusual @ 5:19 pm

TW was all aflutter yesterday about wordie. First she added “flamingo” and from there she started to add some really odd and unusual words that she loves just because she likes how they sound or how they feel in her mouth. Then she discovered the word “ornithomancy” which she thought RJ would love, but she didn’t immediately grasp the idea (which was sort of weird). I think when I have a few minutes I will join Wordie and start creating a word list of words I don’t like.

Art History

Filed under: entertainment, homeschool, payperpost, websites — newandunusual @ 4:44 pm

As you may know, I have a homeschool blog over on Clubmom called Fast Times @ Homeschool High. As you may also know, I have a homeschooled high schooler who is an art freak. As you may also know, that homeschooler is now part of a dual enrollment program at the local community college and she’s taking Art Fundamentals this semester and Drawing 1 next semester.

Since she is doing most of her learning at the community college, I don’t have the pleasure of helping her learn every single day - all day long. And that’s too bad, for a lot of reasons. One reason is this new site I saw on PPP this morning, Art in the Picture.com. Michelle is going to flip over this when she wakes up!

The first link I clicked was to Andy Warhol. Michelle wrote an essay for English Comp last month about Warhol’s paintings that are on display at the Harn Museum right now. Michelle likes Warhol. Not as much as she likes Dali, of course. I was so impressed with the layout of information that I’ve been clicking and clicking and clicking.

Each artist section has tabs that include an overview, a biography, quotes from the artist, sample paintings, and the ability to order a print through Art.com. This is an excellent resource for homeschoolers and for anyone who wants quick and easy access to information about art, artists and museums.
