Who works online?

Filed under: payperpost, work — newandunusual @ 6:39 am

I do, I do! I have soooo many jobs, it’s tough to list them all. But I’ve found that’s often the case for people who work from home - particularly those who work from home, online.

People are constantly asking me how they can quit their job, stay home and make a living - like I do. Ha. I got lucky. I really did and I can’t manufacture luck for someone else. I can, however, suggest people interested in quitting their job and starting their own business or making their own business opportunities do some research. They can start with Allcreatives. This is a pretty new site but there are some good bits of information available and I suspect more will be coming, pretty quickly.

Do some research folks. You can work from home and make a decent/good living. But the opportunities aren’t just going to fall into your lap. You have to work for them.

Stuff I Use…

Filed under: blogs, homeschool, websites, work — newandunusual @ 4:53 pm

Someone asked me what “evernote” meant today when I mentioned it in a message board post. So this morning I’m going to provide a list of tools I use (and often mention).

1) Bloglines is my feed reader/aggregator.
2) Evernote is a notepad where I keep all sorts of tidbits of info - from addresses and phone numbers to grocery lists to urls to peek at later.
3) Protopage is a mashup that I use for Michelle’s homeschool stuff.

Those are the big three. It would be hard to survive work without them.

RockStartUp.Com

Filed under: entertainment, payperpost, websites, work — newandunusual @ 5:33 pm

Reality TV for internet start-ups? Heh. Pay Per Post crossed with reality tv is a great idea. It’s amusing and interesting. Remember that early video of PPP taking over The Today Show? Good TV and good marketing - well that’s what RockStartUp is.

I watched the first episode right after they launched and enjoyed it but I hadn’t been back to the site since then. I just watched all of the episodes and they’re sort of addicting. I had only planned to watch one more, (the one where they changed offices because “moving stories” are like horror stories and I like horror stories).

Do you work for a dot.com? If you do then some of the stuff here will feel like your own office and your own life. If you don’t but have always wondered about the weirdos errr professionals running your favorite dot.com then you definitely want to watch RockStartUp. And, check out the rockstar bios, every website should have their staff create video bios. Pure text is so ’80s, don’t you think? I’m very amused to see that Dan was hired simply because he was sitting on a bench wearing a yellow fedora, I cannot tell you how many websites hire staff in just this way.

This is reality TV, folks. Internet reality TV. Watch it.

I am Time’s Person of the Year

Filed under: websites, work — newandunusual @ 5:15 pm

And so are you.

Is this one of the oddest Time Person of the Year selections or what? It seems like a cop-out to me. I’m all for collaboration and community, it’s what I DO. I preach it day in and day out, often to people who just don’t get IT and never will because they don’t believe in either collaboration or community when money is involved - or the making of money is involved. You can’t control collaboration or community, not really, and that scares the money people.

But even as much as I believe in it - I don’t see it as “person of the year” material for Time. I think they couldn’t choose a person of the year so they took the easy way out. Or maybe they’re about to launch their own social networking/web 2.0 portal and this is the first step in kicking it off.

Performance Review

Filed under: payperpost, work — newandunusual @ 4:53 pm

I really hate performance appraisals and I hate performance reviews. I’ve never worked for a company that had Appraisal Software that I really liked or made my life easier. Let’s face it, fighting with software to enter data for a performance review is just not going to be high on priority list - ever. There’s real work to be done everyday. One year I took a day off of work, a vacation day, just to catch up on performance appraisal and review stuff. That’s just sad, isn’t it?
