The Tube

Filed under: daily life, travel, websites — newandunusual @ 5:19 pm

We were in London last month, I mentioned that, right? We spent a LOT of time in the Tube or the Underground or the Subway - whatever you prefer to call it. We called it The Tube and occasionally we called it HELL (5pm rush hour traffic was madness).

We also called it interesting and fun. I wish more big cities had underground transportation systems. Check out this site that lists the Top Underground Transit Systems. There are some great photos and videos. Interesting stuff.

Does it suck or does it rock?

Filed under: websites — newandunusual @ 3:14 am

That’s the question we all want to know - or think we know the answer to. Now there’s a website that answers the question once and for all. Sucks-Rocks

Wordpress rocks, Blogger not so much.
Yahoo not great, Google ok but better than MSN.

Pay Per Post - 9.3, which is a great score.

Football Forum!

Filed under: entertainment, payperpost, websites — newandunusual @ 3:47 pm

Just in time for the Super Bowl! Check out this nfl message board community. It’s a relatively young community, as far as message board communities go, but it’s very very busy. In fact, I’d be overwhelmed if my personal message board community was this busy!

The Fantasy football folder, general college football folder and general NFL football folder seem to have gotten the most attention but the niche folders certainly aren’t asleep.

I currently live in “gator country” but am originally from South Carolina so this Spurrier thread made me smile. The Gamecocks can keep him, I’m pretty sure the Hurricanes don’t want him. LOL!

Who’s your pick in the Super Bowl? Go talk about it!

Wrong doggone number

Filed under: daily life, payperpost, websites — newandunusual @ 3:44 pm

Incoming calls on my cell phone are free. That doesn’t mean I am going to answer every Tom, Dick and marketing company who calls me - I’m not. But then, when I don’t answer a number I don’t recognize, I begin to wonder WHO it was and WHY they were calling me on my cell. Reverse Cell Phone Look Up is a handy tool to help me figure that out.

Time for a new phone

Filed under: daily life, payperpost, tech, websites — newandunusual @ 3:51 pm

I am officially looking for a new cell phone. This means I am also looking for a new cell phone plan. Right now I’m no a Nextel plan, and so are two of the big kids. Jenn and my mom and my sister and my brother all have Verizon. Last year, I didn’t switch. I just renewed, kept my old phone and took a $50 credit as my renewal bonus. I can’t do that this year, my phone is seriously tired. The buttons don’t want to “press” and it shuts down - totally just shuts down for no reason - at random moments.

I’ve been lookin at the top ten free Verizon cell phones. Wirefly also has other plans and phones listed. This makes it pretty simple to compare all the plans, and make a good choice. Do I want a pink Razr? I might.

My Thing for Your Thing

Filed under: websites — newandunusual @ 3:32 pm

I love that tag line! Swap Thing has an awful lot of stuff I like, besides the tag line. Sometimes I just load the front page to see what the “recently added things” are. Right now the list is pretty basic - books, a pair boots, some maternity pants. I’ve seen some pretty unusual things on there in the past, though. Cemetary plots? Car doors? You really never know what you’ll find there.

Encyclocentral

Filed under: entertainment, payperpost, shopping, websites — newandunusual @ 3:07 pm

I’m mindlessly surving this “encyclopedia” of sites. Why am I doing this? Because it’s mindless and it feels a lot like picking up an encyclopedia and just flipping through the pages. That is something I used to really enjoy doing. That is something I miss about books. It’s good to know you can still do that with Encyclocentral.

I started with Book Publishers and clicked around using the drop down menu. I surfed Pink Mascara on the P page. I surfed zinc, zippers and Zaftique on the Z page. I’m headed off to the A page to see what I can find.

This feels like a good way to start my day.

Kiss and Tell

Filed under: daily life, websites — newandunusual @ 4:30 pm

Where did you have your first kiss? Go on, you can tell me. Actually, you can tell the world! Where I Had My First Kiss is just waiting for you to add your pushpin to the world map, and a few important little details to go along with. You can get mushy and sentimental or you can rate the kiss from 1-10 if you like. It’s your kiss, you call the shots.

Newscribe

Filed under: entertainment, payperpost, websites — newandunusual @ 5:02 pm

Look at this, another site that lets you decide which news is important. Newscribe allows you to “keep” the news articles that are important to you. You can also search within various simple categories and search seems to work well.

It also allows you to comment on articles that interest you. It’s pretty easy to use. The only problem I found was when I clicked “comment” on an article and then changed my mind and decided not to comment. I finally figured out that by clicking anywhere on the screen (outside of the comment box) I could get back to the article. It just wasn’t intuitive for me. Other people probably knew that immediately. When others have commented on an article, it’s pretty easy to follow their conversations. They seem to be threaded rather than linear but I wonder what it will look like if they ever get more than a few comments per article. Imagine 100, how will the software handle that

The “My News” screen is interesting. When you “keep” an article, it’s saved within the category rather than just getting lumped together with all of the news you’ve kept. So if you keep 2 articles in “science” and 1 in “entertainment” and 1 in “world”, those are all kept separate and additional stories that are related are provided in each category. I like it. I wish I could tag these myself though. Within the “science” category I have 4 articles saved - 1 is women’s health related, 1 is diet related, 2 are saved purely for homeschool purposes. If I could tag these within each category, I’d be THRILLED. It will get difficult to track down what I’m looking for if I use this for too long - or I’ll have to be good about keeping “My News” clean and current. I’m not so good about keeping things “clean and current” though.

Overall, it’s a nice little tool. I could see myself using it.

Insurance

Filed under: home, payperpost, websites — newandunusual @ 7:29 pm

How timely! As part of our start to the new year, a little researching of our current insurance situation is in order. And a little research into our insurance options are also in order. Insure121 has a ton of information about all types of insurance in the UK. Car insurance, home insurance and even pet and travel insurance. You name it, they’ve got the info you need.
